Italic is deadly

This morning I had something very funny happen to me. We were working on a site bug here where the identical English and French pages would display differently in Internet Explorer 6. The French page’s content wouldn’t line up with the rest of the page. We spent 1 hour and 30 minutes trying to find the problem.

Turns out, the combination of italic text and a hyperlink caused the problem. Was it our template’s fault (that I never touched in my life so I can’t say for sure, neither do I have the power to change it) or the browser’s fault?

I’m pretty sure it was IE6 (note, the problem wasn’t present in any other browser).
